Oldies but Goodies Session

Day 1 – May 9, 2024 (1:00 PM – 2:30 PM)

The "Oldies but Goodies" session will have invited speakers who will discuss and share how they have taught a specific Computer Science topic, over the years, in an interesting and insightful way.

In line with the 25th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Computing Society of the Philippines (CSP), the invited speakers of this special session are all pioneers of CSP.

Dr. Arnulfo P. Azcarraga

Dr. Arnulfo P. Azcarraga: Ph.D. Computer Science from INP Grenoble, France, MS Computer Science from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand; BS Applied Mathematics, cum laude, from the University of the Philippines at Los Baños (UPLB). University Fellow and recently retired Professor of Computer Science at De La Salle University. Had been VC for Research, Associate VC for External Relations, Executive VP (Canlubang Campus), Dean, Graduate School Director, and Vice Dean of the College of Computer Studies. Had been a senior research fellow at the School of Computing, National University of Singapore, and currently a certified Senior Quality Assurance assessor and trainor of the ASEAN University Network. Published research in the theory and applications of self-organizing maps, artificial neural networks, and Generative AI. Member of the AI Council of PCIEERD/DOST. Most outstanding alumnus of UPLB (1996), of PSHS (Gawad Lagablab 2005), Ateneo de Zamboanga (2015), and of AIT (2018). A longtime member of Mensa.

Dr. Henry N. Adorna

Dr. Henry N. Adorna: Professor of (Theoretical) Computer Science since 2007 and Scientist at UP Diliman; holds the Semirara Mining Corporation Professorial Chair of Computer Science since 2012. HNA started AC(LR)Lab and Membrane computing in the country from 2007. HNA works primarily on P systems since 2009, but also include algorithmics for NP-hard problems, and models of computations. HNA was awarded “2015 Gawad Tsanselor para sa Natatanging Guro” and “2019 NRCP Achievement Award” (Discrete Mathematics and TCS). HNA mentored and graduated six Ph.D. (2014 to 2023) students from UP Diliman. HNA visited various institutions and research laboratories from 2004 to 2023 in Asia and Europe. HNA was Board of Directors of CSP, Inc. (2004-2022); Editor-in-Chief of PCJ (2010-2015); Member Editorial Board (2010-present); Member, Editorial Board of Science and Engineering Journal; International Journal on Foundation of Computer Science. Full Member, PAASE; Regular Member, NRCP-Division 2; Member, IMCS, ACM, EATCS, and ACiE.

Dr. Maria Mercedes T. Rodrigo

Dr. Maria Mercedes T. Rodrigo: Professor at the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science. Her research interests include learning analytics, artificial intelligence in education, and technology in education. She is the head of the Ateneo Laboratory for the Learning Sciences. Her research work focuses on on computers and related technologies in education, human-computer interaction, computer science education and others. She is on the Executive Committee of the Artificial Intelligence Education Society. Dr. Rodrigo serves on the editorial boards of several high-impact journals including Artificial Intelligence in Education, the Internet and Higher Education and Research and Practice in Technology-Enhanced Learning. In 2021, Dr. Rodrigo received the Distinguished Researcher Award from the Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education (APSCE) and is President of APSCE.

Dr. Rafel P. Saldaña

Dr. Rafel P. Saldaña: Ph.D. in Mathematical and Computational Biophysics from Monash University, Australia. Retired Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics and Computational Science at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Has been, among many others, Co-Principal Investigator, ONCO-MEDIA Project; Project Leader for Ateneo de Manila University – EUAsia Grid; Founding Editor-in-Chief, Philippine Information Technology Journal; First Managing Editor, Philippine Computing Journal (PCJ); President, Computing Society of the Philippines; Associate Editor, East Asia Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (EASIAM) Journal; Contest Director for ACM ICPC Asia Programming Contest, Asia-Pacific Informatics Olympiad (APIO); Campus Director, Philippine Science High School Main Campus; President, Rotary Club of Agham.

Research interests include, among many others, agent-based modeling and simulation, cellular automata, cluster and grid computing, modeling and simulation, computational science applications (including environment and health), data science, artificial intelligence.

Dr. Allan A. Sioson

Dr. Allan A. Sioson: Ph.D. in Computer Science and Applications from Virginia Tech, U.S.A. Currently AVP and Head of Internal Analytics at Gcash, and part-time graduate school lecturer at the Ateneo de Manila University. Previously with Cobena and Ateneo de Naga University. Awarded NAST Outstanding Young Scientist in 2010.
